The American landscape is a source of pride, national identity, and pleasure for many in the United States, in part because artists have helped shape and reinforce these understandings. In the nineteenth century, the paintings of the Hudson River School artists helped foster a love of nature, inspiring people to recognize the beauty and importance of natural spaces.
Immersed in this tradition, Gail Beveridge’s poetic paintings present a vibrant vision of the rich and varied landscape of Northeast Florida. Depicting the pristine beaches, pine forests, salt marshes, and cypress swamps of our region, Beveridge’s powerfully realized images connect the viewer to these special places. While modern technology increasingly encroaches into human connections with nature, Beveridge’s paintings highlight the importance of the natural world to our daily lives and promote personal engagement with our region’s spectacular scenery. “Through my work,” Beveridge states, “I hope the viewer will appreciate the wild beauty of these natural wonders and want to experience them firsthand.”

The exhibition opening for Embracing Nature will take place from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, August 5 during St. Augustine’s First Friday Art Walk.
Take a Painting Workshop with Gail Beveridge
August 20, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
This workshop will guide you in creating and conveying your unique visual voice in a painting. After a quick review of the basic elements and principles of design, Gail will demonstrate how to take a scene and make it your own personal statement. We will work from photos and start with quick sketches or notans to develop the concept and then spend the rest of the workshop on a painting. Gail will work in oils, but students can work in other media. This workshop is for those with knowledge of the basics and some painting experience.
The Finding Your Visual Voice workshop will be hosted indoors at the Lightner Museum. A boxed lunch from the Cafe Alcazar will be provided to all participants.

About the Artist
After many years as a commercial interior designer, Gail Beveridge became a professional artist in 1999. As an award-winning sculptor, she exhibited in juried and invitational shows throughout the U.S. For the past decade, Beveridge has pursued her long-time interest in painting. In 2016, she was awarded Best of Media—Painting in the Find Your Park Plein Air Exhibition at the Lightner Museum. In 2018, her landscape paintings of Northeast Florida were exhibited at the Jacksonville International Airport. In 2020, she won first place in the St. Augustine Art Association’s “Honors” exhibit. In 2021, her work was featured in the Art Ventures 30th Anniversary Exhibit at The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens, and in 2022 won the Romanza Award in the Adventures in Plein Air exhibit at the Art Association. Beveridge lives and works in St. Augustine and is represented by The Vault @1930, a fine art gallery in Jacksonville, FL.
